Welcome Catherine Bybee / Highland Protector

I just started this Highland series last month and I have been devouring if faster than a gallon of ice cream after a break up. I can’t get enough. These time travels are about the MacCoinnich Clan and are set in Scotland and California. Highlander Protector is the story of their youngest daughter, Amber. The MacCoinnichs are Druids and each carries with them a unique gift. Unfortunately Amber’s is on the verge of killing her. Being an empathy has her physically and emotionally drained and nearing the end of her life at an accelerated pace.
Gavin Kincaid is a Druid warrior whose duty in life is to serve and protect the family that he has never met, the MacCoinnichs. After one journey to the Clan’s stronghold he becomes intrigued by a painting of a young woman. When he asks for help in finding out whom the woman is, he not only finds out who she is but is thrown through time to meet her. Will his special Druid gift be able to save her life or has he arrived too late?
I really loved this book. It is a little different than the others as there are no wars going on but you can tell it is building up to another battle in the next book. I also enjoyed catching up with the other family members and characters that I equally loved from the previous books. I’m so glad I was able to read these books at the same time as now I will be impatiently awaiting the next edition. Catherine, you can take me back in time to meet sexy Highland hotties anytime!!

Highland Protector LARGE

I asked Cathy a few questions about time travel and here are her answers! Also, don’t forget to enter her giveaway at the bottom of this blog!

What was the first time travel book you ever read and what attracted you to writing one?

I honestly don’t remember the first time travel romance I ever read. I do remember having a very early fascination with time travel. I loved all those historical romances and loved placing myself in the role of the heroine. I made up time travel love stories in my head way back in High School. *sigh* It took much longer for me to actually complete an actual book, however.

If you could travel back in time to meet someone or be at a certain event what would it be?

That would be hard. I think if you go back in time and attempt to change history you stand the risk of screwing up everything more. Or, messing up your own history… or… I think I might like to go back in time to see what life was really like in Regency London…or Medieval Scotland. But I would need to be a noble because I sure as heck don’t want to find myself in the wrong end of poverty. Ya know?

There is so much detail and planning for these book and I love how everything is connected so well. How did you go about planning such a large time travel series?

I didn’t. Seriously, it wasn’t quite planned. The first book went really well and lent itself to book two…and by the time I managed The End on Silent Vows I knew there would be an epic ending in Redeeming Vows. Then my fans kept asking for more and the series continued with the Highland titles. For me, there isn’t so much planning that goes into the books from the beginning because the characters don’t really have a chance to truly come alive until I tell their stories. That isn’t to say that I don’t have a rather clear picture of the next book. I do, but I know that it can change as I’m writing it…and I go with whatever the tide wants me to do. That’s what the characters need or want…and that’s okay with me. I’m just the writer getting their stories out. I know, it sounds like the voices in my head are doing all the talking…and in a way they are.

I’m comfortable with my psychosis. LOL

Do you have any future plans for time travel books and if so what time period would you choose?

Not to give anything away… but I think I’d like to explore Gavin’s world more. Nuff said.

Who is your favorite Scottish hottie? Can be real or fictional?

I think Fin is my favorite. And yeah, he’s my fictional character. But damn he is hot!

Any plans to ever visit Scotland?

I sure hope so. Scotland is on my bucket list and I see no reason that can’t happen in the next few years. I want to visit the place I’ve tried so hard to create in my stories.

EXCERPT

1686, MacCoinnich Keep Scotland

Fighting with a sword ranked up there with having sex without an orgasm. Holding the damn thing took too much energy and the end-result was anticlimactic and messy. Kincaid’s free hand itched to pull any one of his hidden weapons from the pockets of his modified seventeenth century clothes and finish off his opponent. The man’s death was inevitable. He had no earthly prayer of taking Kincaid. Even without the use of Kincaid’s gift, the kilted Scot had two fatal flaws working against him. One, he underestimated his opponent, never a good thing in battle. Two, Kincaid’s Druid gift would prevent any fatal blow from reaching his skin. He was damn near immortal.

Kincaid missed being skewered by the Scot’s blade by lunging to his right and placing one foot on the edge of the Keep’s massive stairs. Above him, other men fought, some with powers, a few without. Preventing the ancient Keep from falling into any hands that didn’t belong to descendants of the original owners, wasn’t going to happen. These missions were planned and orchestrated with extreme caution and precision.

The Scot advanced again—sweat falling from his brow with the effort of the fight.

“Kincaid!” He heard his name from the floor above, but didn’t make the mistake of looking up.

“I’m busy.” He blocked his opponent’s sword again, locked the man’s free arm, and attempted to pull it behind his back.

Kincaid was rewarded by taking an elbow in the ribs and having the wind knocked from his lungs.

“Finish him already. We need to move on.”

Moving on was his queue that their time was nearly up.

“I guess…” He shoved the Scot a foot away and lifted his sword high. “That means we’re done here.”

“Your confidence will be your downfall,” the Scot said.

Kincaid motioned the man forward. …said the spider to the fly…

The Scot advanced with a surge of strength and determination.

Kincaid held his ground, threw up his Druid shield, and watched as shock filled the man’s gaze when his sword bounced off the shield and opened him up for Kincaid’s final blow.

Killing never sat well with him. But he was a warrior and killing was part of his soul. Damn shame that.

Kincaid heard his name called again, and he took the familiar stairs two at a time to reach the others. From the corner of his eye, his gaze met a painting on the wall, one he’d not seen before.

His steps faltered as he connected with the haunting gaze of the most beautiful woman he’d ever seen. Didn’t matter that the painting was one dimensional, or that the woman was most likely dead…even in this century. He did a quick inventory of the other images on the walls and recognized only one. The same painting hung in that very space on the wall, so many years in the future. But this one…the picture of the woman with her long dark hair and pained focus as she attempted to smile, beckoned him. This painting he’d never seen.

“Kincaid! Dammit man, get your ass up here!”

Kincaid shook away the woman’s soulful gaze, bounded up the stairs, and trailed his band of men up the spiral staircase of the turret.

As they moved to the privacy of the bricked room, he noticed the small face of one of the Keep’s youngest occupants watching from behind an adjacent door.

Rory moved to close the door when Kincaid motioned toward their witness.

The child, a girl not more than ten years old watched with wide eyes. She didn’t appear frightened in the least.

“Is she…”

Rory lifted his hand, palm up, and from it, a small ball of fire swirled from nothing and hung suspended.

The girl’s wide eyes lifted and a small smile inched at the side of her lips. She lifted her hand and a sputtering of fire sprang from her fingertips.

Kincaid felt his pulse dip as he lifted his finger to his lips “Shh,” he whispered with what he hoped looked like a friendly smile.

Noise from the long staircase met their ears. Rory ushered them inside and closed the door. Before the noise from below became another battle, Kincaid closed his eyes, lifted his shield, and spread it over his small party…then he began to chant and time slid away.

Meet the two leading characters:

kristen

 alec

Excerpt:

I heard a banging at my door, not a gentle knock but a loud racket which shook the whole door. My eyes sprang open. What in the world? I looked around the room, trying to get my bearings. The hotel room was bathed in warm, bright light and my heart skipped a beat when I realized it was morning.

“Oh, Kristeeen?” Alec’s grumpy voice sounded over the loud banging.

Fred jumped off the bed and rushed to the door wagging his tail, visibly excited to hear him.

“Fred, how can you fraternize with the enemy?” I grumped, heading to the door. As soon as I opened it my traitor of a dog jumped into Alec’s arms and licked him as if he were his favorite person in the world, making him chuckle.

“Finally, the princess decides to greet the day,” he said and grinned at me once he was done petting the dog. Suddenly, his eyes dropped and his smile slowly faded away.

I blinked perplexed. Is he staring at my breasts? My God, he’s staring at my breasts! The realization elicited tremors all over my body, causing my nipples to strain against the fabric of my nightgown. Holy crap! My nightgown! I tensed when I remembered the transparent lace across my chest.

“Give him to me!” I snatched Fred out of his arms and used him to hide my aroused state. “What’s wrong with you, hammering at my door like a crazy man?” I fussed.

He cleared his throat as if to regain his voice before he answered me. “I’ve been standing here for more than five minutes calling you and nothing. What was I supposed to do? You said eight sharp and it’s almost eight thirty.”

“Damn it!” I hurried back inside the room and put Fred on the bed, then quickly looked for something comfortable to change into. I took out a pair of denim shorts and a white shirt from my suitcase, then tugged at my nightgown to pull it off over my head. I stopped halfway when I noticed him sitting on the bed, casually assessing me. “Alec!” I shuddered, gaping at him in shock. “What are you doing in here? Can’t you see I’m trying to change clothes?” I stammered in bewilderment. I couldn’t believe he’d gotten a glimpse of my equally transparent panties.

“I’m just waiting to take your luggage.” He smiled innocently, clearly not finding anything wrong with his actions.

“Wait outside, you peeping tom!” I was amazed by how brazen he turned out to be.

“My bad,” he said dryly and left the room.

It took me a moment to recover from the shock and register the warm wetness between my legs. I sighed, once more feeling betrayed by my own body. “I can’t believe him! And I refuse to be turned on, no matter how he makes me feel!” I grumbled.

When I finally exited the room, I found him waiting in the hallway and I marched up to him. “I can’t believe you saw me in my underwear! I am furious with you.” I walked on, eager to put some distance between us.

“Hey!” He grabbed my arm and pulled me abruptly, my chest slamming against his hard torso. “You’re right. What I did was inappropriate and I’m sorry. I just found myself absentmindedly walking in. I didn’t mean to be rude.” He excused himself.

“You expect me to believe that?” I murmured flush against him, taken aback by his sudden change in attitude.

“Yes, I do.”

“You were checking me out.”

“Was not,” he retorted calmly, his face merely a few inches away from mine. Then I caught the smile in his eyes. He was lying like a dog.

“Let go of me,” I whispered, feeling my heart pounding heavily and my chest heaving in agitation.

Being this close to him was doing funny things to me. I couldn’t think. I couldn’t move. I couldn’t breathe. Everything in me wanted to move closer, to lean in, to touch, but I stubbornly resisted the unwelcome temptation.

What are you doing to me? I cried out in my mind.

He leaned toward me slowly and I panicked, my breath catching in my throat. With a sudden jerk I managed to free myself from his grip and rushed to the elevator, never looking back. He followed me in silence, hauling my luggage after him. We travelled down together and I was so aware of him, my whole body reacted as if he were a powerful magnet. I was drawn to him, hanging on to the rail just to stay upright. His eyes held mine with an intensity which made me feel lightheaded and I gasped for air as the space around us suddenly appeared to be too small.

Author bio:

Emily A. Lawrence lives in Transylvania with her family, hence her love for vampires and paranormal books. She is extremely passionate about fiction and has been writing stories, mostly fan fiction, for years now, but only began thinking seriously about publishing approximately a year ago. Having her family’s support, and encouraged by friends and fellow authors, she pursued her dream of becoming a published author.

Usually, she writes contemporary romance in three heat levels: sweet, sensual and erotic. However, she would like to try her hand at other genres one day, such as paranormal or mystery.

When she’s not writing, she enjoys traveling and experiencing new cultures, new sceneries, food and meeting new people, or simply reading a good book.

Where Love Takes Us – Blurb

“It wasn’t supposed to be like this!” has become the mantra in Jennifer Quinn’s head since her recent divorce. She was too old to be here…to be single. Melancholy and unsure about anything Jennifer takes her long time friend Niki’s advice and gets back to her roots…in Seattle.

Devilishly handsome, arrogant, and cocky Noel Burns is a man of success. He’s also a man of layers and most people can’t get past what he portrays. No one until Jennifer.

The last thing either of these people is looking for is a relationship. Jennifer finds Noel highly irritating (and young!) at his best, while Noel finds her magnetic and wise.

Seemingly unsuitable and unplanned attractions lights a fiery passion this duo never expected.

Will they throw caution to the wind? Will they take a chance on passion?

Where Love Takes Us – Excerpts

#1) “You’re always in a hurry, Ms. Jennifer Quinn.” She heard his English accent boom from behind her as she walked toward her car. “Why is that?”

She spun to face him and almost bumped right into him. Damn, why couldn’t he be some bald, fat guy instead of this hunk standing in front of me? “I didn’t realize I was.”

“Yes, I think you do. Does it perhaps have something to do with me?” There it was again. That tone of arrogance creeping through.

“You wish,” she replied, quickly turning herself back around.

She heard him chuckle. “Could I interest you in lunch?”

“I don’t think so, but thanks for asking.”

“Oh come on, Jennifer. It isn’t like I’m asking you out on a date. It’s only lunch.”

“No, really Noel, I can’t. Not today. I’m going to meet my sister. She’s just in town for the week-end, and I haven’t seen her since I moved back.”

“Very well, a rain check then, for dinner, say this coming Friday evening?”

“That would be fine. Thank you. Call me with details, okay?” She arrived at her car grateful to be able to leave.

Noel opened her door. “Friday, it is. I’ll call you tomorrow. Enjoy your lunch with your sister.”

Jennifer knew he was watching as she drove off, catching his figure in her rearview mirror. Why is he always laughing? Is it me?

#2)  That seemed to strike some kind of chord, as she watched his face darken. Wrong thing to say, Jennifer.

“Well, you were wrong, weren’t you? But then, you really don’t know a thing about what I do, do you?”

“I know what I saw, and what I saw was you and a young woman, alone in your studio. A naked young woman, I might add! What was I supposed to think, Noel?”

“That I was merely working on my latest piece. That, Jennifer, is what you were supposed to think!”

She was unsure whether he was trying to get a rise out of her or make her jealous. Whichever, Jennifer was determined not to let either get the better of her. “I thought I would touch base with Niki today and see if she and Greg have firmed up their flight reservations.”

“And gossip, or whatever it is you women do, about what you thought you walked into yesterday.”

“Yes, you’re right, Noel! That’s exactly what we’ll do—talk about you and your young model-whore. My God!”

As soon as the words left her mouth, Jennifer regretted them. Noel said nothing. Instead, he made a grunting noise, picked up his newspaper, and appeared to read. Jennifer was, however, not going to apologize. He needed to know that she was not happy, especially about his lack of explanations.

“Oh no, you don’t!” she exclaimed. “You’re not going to hide behind your newspapers or your sculpting, or anything else. Not this time.”

Jennifer forced herself up out of the chair. She was furious now. How dare he! She limped over to the small, white writing desk that sat under a window. She had been using this particular desk because it overlooked the Eiffel Tower, and she felt a tremendous surge of inspiration whenever she sat there.

Jennifer had printed out a copy of her latest work. It was her first full-length novel, which she had started months ago in Seattle. Having hit a wall with it, Jennifer had put it down until she arrived in Paris, where her creativity seemed overflow once again. This particular manuscript was one Jennifer was quite proud of, and Noel was going to read it. All of it!

She picked up the sheath of papers, held together only by a huge binder clip, and hobbled back towards Noel, who was now watching her every move. She dropped it in his lap. “You know, you’re not the only artistic one in this house. This is that story I started back home. The one I got stuck on? The one you told me to put aside until we moved here? That living in Paris would renew my creative juices? Well, guess what, Noel? It did!”

“That’s, um, wonderful, Jen. You finished it?”

“Yes, I finished it! It’s not just good, Noel, its damn good. It still has to go to an editor, but it’s finished.”

“Well, good. I’m proud of you, love.”

“Oh no! You’re not getting off that easily. You’re going to read it, all of it.”

“And I will, love. You know I enjoy reading your work.”

“I know you do, but this time you’re going to read it, not just in its finished form, you’re going to read this version. The finished, unedited version, and once it’s been edited and proofed, you’re going to read it again. This time, Noel, you’re going to read every version until it is ready for publication.”

“Jen, I really…”

“No, no excuses Noel. You started this, and now you’re going to see it through.”

Blurb:

Tired of living life out of a suitcase, traveling auto parts sales representative Jessie Knutson jumps at the chance for a position close to home. When a flat tire keeps her from an interview appointment and the hot tow truck driver awakens her inner cougar, she realizes too much time away has done a number on her libido. Now the only position she wants involves being naked and pressed tightly against a hot, younger man whose eyes say she’s more than a roadside pickup.

BJ Spencer has no time for love with an auto parts store to run, though he yearns to find the right woman someday. So when the smoking hot redhead he rescues alongside the road gives him a sexy smile, he remembers sometimes a man needs to enjoy the finer things in life. Long legs encased in thigh-highs are definitely fine, but Jessie seems to be total perfection in a tempting package. BJ just might be able to make both business and pleasure work for him this time.

Excerpt:

“I hope you like the blues, ma’am. We don’t get too many channels back here.”

Jessica nodded her approval. The sultry vibrations of Southern blues serenaded her. It didn’t take long for BJ to unload her car, pump up the jack, and start working on her tire. Watching the hunky mechanic work, listening to calming music, and feeling the wild rush of pre-storm air was exciting and nostalgic at the same time. She had grown up in a garage like this and instantly felt at home. The place was organized, quaint, and had the distinct smell of rubber and oil. A dark patina of grime coated the walls and worktables. A girly calendar and a time card machine graced the wall above the radio. Even the zip zip sound of the impact wrench was music to her ears.

Somewhere along the way—she really didn’t care when—BJ had shed his shirt. His arm muscles bulged as he pulled off the tire. His sculpted chest glistened, broad shoulders flexed, muscles tightening. Her breasts ached to be pressed naked up against his chest, her body wanted to be held tight in those strong arms. She loved a man with chest hair. Springy black coils enhanced his pecs before tapering to a neat treasure trail heading south. She clasped her hands together, but they still involuntarily wiggled on their own, itching to run their way through the thick, dark curls.

Jessie had time to think while watching him work. Her mind reeled with plans to seduce him, but she was starting to think that was what he wanted her to do. Maybe she would wait and enjoy the show a little longer. He didn’t seem to be in that big a hurry to get the job done.

He checked air pressure in the other three tires for possible leaks as well. BJ stretched and flexed his muscles several times—not that she was counting or anything. Her concentration broke only a couple times to listen to the severe weather warnings beeping on the radio.

BJ strutted by her again and returned from the office carrying a big towel. He headed to an outside water pump. Pulling the pump handle up, he splashed water from the hose over his glistening upper body and head. He shook his head sending a spray of droplets in every direction. Jessie smiled as she enjoyed the show. Boldly he glanced her way every so often and flexed a muscle or two. Yes, he was definitely hoping for some kind of response. She’d let him beg a little more. The click of the water handle hitting the pump ended his shower. Drying off with the towel, he headed back toward her chair.

His eyes locked on hers, a suggestive smile on his face. “Anything else I can interest you in today, ma’am, since we’re already here in the garage? Need any spark plugs, a battery check…” He grinned and raised an eyebrow. “Lube job?” The Southern drawl rumbled slow and exaggerated.

Jessica almost laughed out loud. If she was anymore “lubed up,” she would slide right off the chair.

Sexy Cowboys Make Erotic Westerns!

Tonya_med_PGrated_150x150

Ginger, thank you for having me this week! I’m anxious to chat with your readers about their love of cowboys and reading erotic westerns. Book one, Come Tame Me of my Wild Fillies series, came about because a few readers contacted me to write something that didn’t include BDSM like my Dom/sub series, The Boss’s Pet (only for those who love a bit of bondage in their stories!)

The readers who sent me their request for the westerns liked my writing, just not the bondage part of it so I figured….why not! I’ll try to keep my heroine from tying up her stud but please know that it’ll be hard…not tying him up, I mean. The stud himself will be hard…all over…but I’ll leave you with that thought and tease you to read the stories. I’ve not decided how many books will be in the series but there will be at least three and should more cowboys and fillies contact me to write their story, I’ll continue.

Book one takes place in Wyoming and Tennessee. My heroine’s parents were divorced when Cassi was fifteen (due to a BDSM relationship by her father with another woman – sorry, I had to put in a little tease about the lifestyle!) and her mother moved Cassi to Tennessee for a new beginning. She has a step-father she adores because he treats her mother like royalty. Cassi is my heroine and hates her father for seeking a relationship with another woman. He’s also ignored Cassi for ten years…and so has the boyfriend she left behind – Gabriel Jackson. Leaving him was easy at the time because he appeared to be a participant in the relationship her father had with that ‘other’ woman. Is it any wonder that Cassi refuses to start a relationship of her own in Tennessee? Want to know more about Gabe? I posted a character interview with him HERE – I think you’ll fall in love with the man! *wink*

Cassi’s step-father taught her how to tend to chores on his ranch, how to ride, how to shoot, took her to rodeos and also let her help run the business side of his ranch so one day she could run her own place. Shooting in competitions is one thing she loves but being the champion tops it all. She’s a good shot and knows it…so do the local cowboys who try to get close to her.

All this time, resentment has brewed in Cassi’s heart toward men who only want to use their woman and she’s not let any of them close enough to tear down the wall around her heart. She’s been happy on the ranch and has a close friend she shoots with who has been her best friend since Cassi moved to Tennessee.

When Cassi receives a letter from a Wyoming attorney, anger rears its head again wondering what her father wants now after all those years of ignoring her.

I’d love for you to read Chapter One of Come Tame Me. I hope you enjoy it enough to want a copy of your own. I’m also holding a contest to give away a $10 gift card to one lucky entrant. Leave a comment below to get in the contest, but I’ll be around to chat with those who want to leave a question as well.
