I work with guys and they are always a fun and entertaining group. The conversations pretty much surround sports, politics, hunting, guns, and what’s for supper. Even our treat days are different. No pretty cupcakes or petit fours in our department, heck we dine on whatever someone shot last. My favorite is the venison teriyaki jerky.  If you see Tom walk in with a crock pot, don’t ask, just eat. It is always delicious; we just don’t know what it is. We like to tease him about it containing mystery meat as you never know if you are eating beef, bear, or opossum.

You would think that after being around these guys for almost 10 years now I would have seen and heard it all but they always surprise me. With about half of them being Irish, the blarney and BS can get pretty high. I never know what is going to come out of their mouths. Just the other day, McSorley, one of the Irish guys was telling about how great his grandson was at sports. He said, ‘The dang kid’s so lucky he craps four leaf clovers’.

I thought that was hysterical and I’m pretty sure he used the word crap because I was in the room. Does that mean they always choose their words wisely around me? Heck no. I have unfortunately heard more discussions than I care to about prostrate problems and how many times so and so had to get up and take a piss in the middle of the night. I also know if Paul flags me to step out in the hall, I will be privy to his latest off-color and politically incorrect joke. He’s a hoot!

But one of my favorite things about the guys I work with is that they always support me. They could not have been prouder when I received a contract for my first book. They ask me every day when it will be out. The other thing these guys do is give me suggestions about topics to write a story about.

Just the other day, McSorley came up to me with an article about Jack the Ripper being in Wisconsin. This I had never heard of before. Supposedly Jack had been in the town of Hurley. I have never been to Hurley but the town has a reputation for being wild, woolly, and very wicked. I once went to a wedding in which the groom and best man were from Hurley. During the wedding dance I saw the best man drink enough booze to kill a normal person and when he wasn’t dancing up a storm, he was shouting at the top of his lungs, ‘I’m from Hurley, where highway 71 ends and the fun begins. Woohoo’. Heck, Al Capone, Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson, and others use to come there to relax. Al’s brother, Ralph Capone, had a cabin there and later retired in the community. In 1974 he passed away in one of their a local nursing homes.

UnknownHurley2_preview

Anyway back to the Jack the Ripper story. The same Jack the Ripper that murder several prostitutes in Whitechapel England in the late 1800’s never was in Hurley but the demise of a local women had people wondering. Hurley has long been known as the sin city of the North. It has a history of gambling, prostitution, and in the 1920’s, it totally ignored prohibition. In the 1890’s the town had several houses of ill repute and one of its dance hall beauties named Lottie Morgan was found in an alley with an axe in her head. The murder is still unsolved but with the Whitechapel murders happening around a similar time and also to prostitutes, it was thought that she may have also been a victim of the Ripper.

I am working on a prohibition era book in which the character’s sister goes missing. I had been trying to figure out what had happened to her and when Mr. McSorley handed me this interesting piece of history. It gave me some great new ideas.

So I guess what I am trying to say with this post is that you never know where ideas will come from. For some writers it is a news article, a song, a business card or some other little spark. Mine come from the guys I work with. If I ever happened to be at a convention and people start talking about their muse, I’ll be the one in my chair slinking lower, as my muse is a McSorley whose grandson shits clover. 🙂

All Bottled Up Cover

Excerpt From All Bottled Up:

At any moment, she was expecting to see a larger than life genie manifest from behind the thick billows, or at least hear a reverberating voice granting her the traditional three wishes.

Instead, what she heard was the nasally, high-pitched sound of a complaining middle-aged genie. “Oh my God! There better be a good reason for someone disturbing my beauty sleep!”

When the smoke disintegrated, Robin came face to face with the genie. Well, he was dressed like a genie, but his attire was more eccentric than most fictional genies she had seen in books. It was more than obvious that lavender was his signature color, as well a hint of fuchsia. He had the customary gold bands bound to his wrists, but unlike the traditional white harem pants, his were a deep purple and donned a sequined turban upon his head, that looked like it had been attacked by a Bedazzler. She had to admit…he made it work.

Her silence must have annoyed him, because his voice distracted her thoughts. “Guuuurrrrllll!  You best have a good reason for summoning me. I was having the best dream. Now let’s be quick about this, and maybe it won’t be too late to get Orlando Bloom back in my sub-conscious.” Placing one hand on a hip and ticking off the rules with his other hand he began. “The name is Zahir. You get three wishes. No more, no less. You can wish for anything you like. However, I don’t do true love and I don’t kill anyone. Do you understand?”

“Are you a genie?” Robin stammered as she tried to consume the scene unfolding before very her eyes.

Shrill, disbelieving laughter preceded his reply. “Am I a genie, you ask? Of course, I am! What did you think, I was a lost member of the Spice Girls?!” She raised her eyebrows, as though it was a possibility, given his choice of clothing. Before she could respond he said “Never mind, don’t answer that!”

An Interview with Rory and TJ

Hi everyone, Natalie Gayle here.  Today I’m interviewing Rory Southall, who you’re all getting to know as the incredibly sexy and caring lead from Finding Judgement.   (He’s just about busting a gut laughing at how I’ve described him.)  And his gorgeous wife, TJ Walsh or is it Southall?  (she’s giggling and waving her hand assuring me she’s good with either.  Rory’s telling me very firmly it’s Southall.  – Okay message received!)

Well I can say getting an interview with Rory and TJ was a damned sight easier than what I had to go through with this team mate and good friend Brayden, who you may know from Finding Trust.  For that Rory, I’ll be eternally grateful. Thank you, thank you.

We’re sitting out on the back deck of Rory and TJ’s new beach house, and when I say beach people I mean beach.  You can walk down the back stairs pass to the side of the plunge pool and through the back gate and you’re on the hot golden stuff.  Well let’s dive in and see what they’ve been up to.

NG:  Wow this house is awesome – how on earth did you find it?

(TJ looks up at Rory and nudges him slightly.)

RS:       Oh you want me to answer this one?

TJ:       Well der, you did find this place.

RS:       Well actually it was me and the kids if I’m being totally correct. Katie and Marcus spotted it from the road and then I just charmed the previous owners out of their beach pad.

TJ:       They didn’t stand a chance! (she says turning to grin at me – we have one of those female connection moments)

(I can totally understand what she means, Rory just oozes genuine charm and you just want to please him.            She’s right – the previous owners didn’t stand a chance.)

RS:       Well that’s not totally true Pixie, I did pay them a very big fat wad of cash to sweeten the deal.

TJ:       No doubt it helped Surfer Boy, but you know as well as I do they would have struggled to say no to you.

(Mmm, I’m going to have to agree with TJ on this one).

NG:      So speaking of the kids, how are they settling in?  They’ve been through a lot in the last few months.

TJ:       To be honest the kids are doing much better than I thought. I really expected that we’d have more issues with them.  Sure they have their days, but overall they’ve settled in really well.

(TJ turns to Rory and gives him a little smile and nod encouraging him to go on).

RS:       Yeah they’re good kids but that’s hardly surprising given what a great older sister they have.

(Rory gives TJ a cheeky grin and squeezes her thigh playfully)

TJ:       Flattery will get you everywhere as you know!

(Oh wow, it’s getting hot around here already.  That got me to thinking.)

NG:      So how do you two manage to carve out some privacy given that you’re realistically still very much newly weds?

(Rory cleared his throat and smirked at TJ – she just shrugs and flutters her eyelashes playfully back at him)

RS:       Well one of the attractions with this house is that the master bedroom is on the top floor at the back and the kid’s bedrooms are on the bottom floor down the front.  The house is also constructed of suspended concrete slabs to cater for the harsh salt elements so it’s actually quite soundproof.  Even I have trouble at times hearing through it.

(Well that was revealing and also gives us a great insight into the construction of the house!)

NG:      Come on guys – our readers need a bit more than that.  They want to know if it’s still hot and steamy between you two.

TJ:       Ah Nat you can see okay can’t you? ……….My husband is every woman’s dream.  He’s smart, caring, considerate, funny and he has the body of an Adonis. And he’s not full of himself.  What’s not to love and get all hot and bothered over?  Maybe your question should have been how do I keep my hands off him?

(Mmm excellent point TJ – always knew the girl was smart!)

RS:       Pixie’s too kind.  I’m just a guy that’s very happy because I’ve managed to find myself an amazing woman that totally understands my idiosyncrasies  and what it means to be with me.  The fact that she’s a blonde goddess and comes with a family are just bonuses to me.  I’ve always said the universe loves me and she does.

(I look between them letting them know their answers were all well and good but seriously they dodged the question.)

(TJ huffs a little)

TJ:       Oh all right – the sex is off the charts smoking hot.  That’s what you wanted to know wasn’t it?

NG:      Yes thank you – that will do nicely!

(We all just laugh at that one.  And I can tell just by looking at them, how close they’re sitting and casually touching, it’s the truth. The chemistry between them is blatantly obvious).

NG:      So what are you both up to work wise?

RS:       Well I’ve just been finishing off some of our mandatory annual training but the boss gave me a heads up that I’m about to get assigned to a new case.

NG:      Oh anything interesting?

RS:       Yeah, I think it will be. Dylan’s taking the lead on this one.  I don’t know many of the details just that it’s something to do with illegal drugs in sport.

(Well that does sound interesting).

TJ:       So will I get to meet any famous sports people?

(Rory turns to TJ in mock horror)

RS:       What am I just a means for you to meet famous rock stars and sports people?

TJ:       No, but I’m just curious.  Brayden is so normal I was just wondering if sports stars are the same? (she shrugs)

RS:       Well I guess you’ll just have to wait and find out.  Besides you’ll be too busy with school to get too involved with what I’m doing.

(he’s teasing her something shocking people – you just know Rory will do anything to make her happy and she’s no different with him.)

TJ:       That’s true but you know how these things seem to play out;  somehow we all seem to get involved.  And I’ve only got a couple of weeks left before I graduate.

NG:      So how are the rest of the gang?

RS:       Why don’t you just say what you really mean – which is what are Jazz and Quade up to?

NG:      Because I didn’t want to make it so damned obvious that I was curious as to where these two have got up to.

(Rory and TJ both just laugh at this)

TJ:       Well that’s what we all want to know.  Something’s going on or has happened but neither are talking.

(Rory nods confirming this.)

RS:       Yep – Big Time.  If anything it’s got worse between them.

(Wow people, that’s interesting and hard to believe all at once. Guess I need to go grill Brayden and Rihanna a bit to find out what’s going on).

NG:      Okay guys final question for this part of the interview, and yes I know it’s the question that newly weds always get asked so why should you two be any different?  When can we expect little Rory and TJ’s running around?

(both of them look at each other and burst out laughing and share some sort of private exchange)

NG:      Right – what am I missing here?

RS:       Ah – nothing that’s just our prearranged response to that question.  We figure if you think you its okay to ask it, we think its okay to respond like that.

(Have I just been politely put back in my place?)

NG:      Seriously guys – please give me something?

TJ:       How about this Nat – when it happens you’ll be the second to know.

(I smile and agree)

NG:      I can live with that.  Anyway thanks so much for letting me come and visit with you both.

RS:       Thanks for telling our story and you know we don’t mind if you drop back in soon to see what we’re up to.  (He gets a very devilish look in his eye and TJ blushes).  You never know what we might be up to.

NG:      I’ll take you up on that Rory.

Till next time.

Book Blurb—Finding Judgement

Rory Southall’s dreams have been haunted by the beautiful blonde pixie he’d helped three months ago.  Imagine his surprise when his next assignment is to investigate none other than the very same woman.

TJ Walsh is holding on to her family’s trucking company by a thread.  For the last two and a half years, she’s been trying to keep the debt-ridden business afloat and her family fed.  She’s driven and desperate to make ends meet. But she remembers every detail of a chance meeting three months ago with a handsome stranger.

What happens when a simple supply chain investigation morphs into a deadly web of lies and deceit and TJ finds herself squarely in the middle of it? It seems that very same handsome stranger has rescued her again, but how could that be?   And how exactly does the illegal genetically modified products he’s investigating have anything to do with her?

How will she cope with knowing the danger is much closer to home than she thought? When everyone seems to be gunning for them, can she find love and salvation with Rory before it’s too late?

 About the Author

I recently discovered those school vocational assessments are really interesting and probably correct!  Who would have thought hey?  You see I clearly remember taking one of those in Year 11 (for my US friends I think that equates to junior year in high school).  Anyway semantics.  Well the results came back indicating that I should pursue a career in writing and something else.  What that something else was I can’t remember but the writing thing stuck in my mind.

Sure I’d always liked English and had already developed a ravenous appetite for romance novels by the age of sixteen – but who becomes a writer straight out of school?  So to cut a long story short I went to Uni and studied Business and ended up managing large scale IT projects shortly after.

I can’t complain it’s been a great career and I’ve done some awesome projects and meet some incredible people and I won’t be giving it up anytime soon.  Anyway I’ve messed around with a couple of “secret” novels over the years and I finally decided to get serious and finish one.  Hence “Finding Trust” came about.  And about twenty years later I’ve finally proved a vocational assessment correct, because I love writing!

As to some other stuff about me, I live on the Gold Coast, Australia.  I love spending time with my family and friends.  When I’m not sitting behind a screen playing with IT or writing you might find me down the beach playing in the waves on a jet ski or a bogey board (both are uber cool).  When the weather turns a bit cooler (doesn’t really happen on the Gold Coast), we like to head for the snow.  I’ve discovered I have two kids that are kamikaze skiers – they must take after their father. He’s always at me to “release the handbrake.”  Apparently I’d ski so much better.  I call it a healthy understanding of self-preservation and gravity!

I like to think I can fit in a few workouts and martial arts classes each week.  This tends to be a figment of my imagination more than reality unfortunately.  I am trying to remedy this, but those damn characters just keep demanding to have their stories told and well – there’s always another good book to read!

I hope you enjoy mine.

Please drop me a line I’m active on FaceBook, Twitter and of course here!  I’d love to know what you think of my books and well let’s be truthful – I love talking about books whether they’re mine or someone else’s.  Fiction is just so much more fun than reality!!!

Happy Reading

Natalie Gayle

Description

Just one taste is never enough…

The attraction between Gabrielle and Holden still sizzles on the surface even after all these years since their last encounter. Having just experienced serious relationship breakups neither one is ready to start again. Instead, they make a rebound pact. Casual sex, no strings attached—and rule #1? Don’t fall in love. Problem is, with each scorching encounter, Gabrielle and Holden find themselves falling hard and fast.

After college, Gabrielle Dane makes one terrific mistake. Thinking she’s sneaking into her crush’s bedroom at an all-night party, she ends up sleeping with her older brother’s best friend. It’s only when the sun comes up that she recognizes Holden Bellamy. Mortified, Gabrielle leaves to train with a renowned chef in France, vowing never to return to her hometown and the awkwardness of her one night stand mix-up. But several years later, she finds herself doing just that, and she runs smack into the delicious man who makes her catch her breath.

Holden Bellamy, owner of Belle Ami, a critically acclaimed vineyard, has always had a thing for his best friend’s little sister…even if she was off limits. Waking up to her in the morning several years back was a remarkable surprise, one that crashed and burned when she left town without a word. Now he’s face to face with the woman he never stopped wondering about.

A Sneak Peek at THE REBOUND PACT

As she neared the exit, a sign caught her eye with a picture of purple grapes inside a wine glass, below it said: Belle Ami Vineyards.

“Perfect,” she muttered.

A stop at the vineyard to purchase a couple bottles of wine and then she’d head to her Dad’s place. She wasn’t ready for the conversation he’d want to have regarding Len. She stared at her empty ring finger on the steering wheel, tears already stinging her eyes. Her finger still showed the lines of where her ring had been.

Gabrielle followed the signs for the vineyard, pulling into a nearly empty parking lot, her tires crunching over the gravel. There were only three other cars parked.

Damn. She hoped they hadn’t closed already. She’d forgotten how everything in the town of Mount Airy kept farmer’s hours.  She climbed out of the car and walked toward the entrance. The door opened easily when she pulled, but she didn’t see anyone. She walked up to the bar and picked up the tasting menu.

Gabrielle loved wine. Had even volunteered at many a wine tasting event, pouring glasses, talking shop to wine enthusiasts, and even turning some non-winos into vino connoisseurs.

The Belle Ami merlot looked right up her alley with a tangy bouquet of pomegranate and cocoa. She turned in a circle, her fingernails tapping against the “green” pressed bamboo counter.

“Can I help you?” a smooth, sensual, very male voice said from behind.

Oh. My. God.

Gabrielle turned around slowly, unable to breathe. She came face to face with Holden Bellamy. His face itself was perfection in the flesh. Chiseled. A wide square jaw, cheek bones she’d kill for, kissable lips and a nose that spoke of good genes. Dark brown, nearly black hair cut short enough to be in style, but still rugged, a few strands falling over his forehead. Her entire body stilled as she gazed at him, wide-eyed.

He was just as alluring, if not more so than he’d been before.

A jolt of longing wracked her. Her belly fluttered. Goosebumps rose along her arms making her skin tingle. Memories came flooding back of their one night together. Her body hadn’t forgotten, even with the passing of time, and neither had her mind. But with those memories and the pull of her attraction came regret. For what she’d thrown away. For the hurt she’d caused him. For not telling him the truth.

He wore a tight black t-shirt with the winery’s logo on his right pec. His jeans looked to be designer and if he turned around… She gulped, gazing at his flawless physique and then back up into his crystal blue eyes that seemed to delve right into the center of her soul. A light bulb sparked inside her mind. Bellamy… Was it possible this was his winery? A play on words?

“Gabrielle?”

He remembered her. Her stomach tightened. Of course he remembered her. She’d known him for years. Her body trilled a tune, as if her flesh remembered the way he’d touched her. He flashed her a smile, showing white, faintly imperfect teeth. Teeth that had skimmed naughtily over her flesh.

“Yes, hi, it’s been so long…” She trailed off, feeling awkward at showing up here six years after walking out on him.

About Murder in the World Below

Murder in the World Below introduces a tight-knit community of second and third generation survivors of a government institutional system that went horribly wrong at the hands of people in control.

Description

A Haven Mystery
In 1922 the federal government built the largest facility for handicapped children in the country, hidden in the Shenandoah Mountains of Virginia. It was closed forever in 1960 amid horrifying stories of deplorable conditions, overcrowding, illegal testing and sexual abuse of the young inmates.

Sixty-one years later, the academy is now a community college, all trace of its evil past swept away. Or is it? For under the campus of renovated buildings, escapees from the academy and their descendants still live in an elaborate series of tunnels and caves, hiding their differences and fear of the upper world.

Haven, as the residents call their underground home, is a happy, thriving community until they learn their source of power is about to be cut off. A resourceful young woman named Awen sets out to find an alternative source of energy. But someone in Haven is murdering people and sabotaging her efforts.

Aided by a professor from the college, Awen is in a race to expose the killer and hunt for a source of energy that will save Haven. Unfortunately, the murderer now has their sights on Awen as the next victim, and time is running out for the world below.

A Sneak Peek at MURDER IN THE WORLD BELOW

Billy Two flung aside the tarp and stomped into the small cave Awen Four used as her bedroom. She jumped, startled. Her rat, Coco, squeaked then dove into the crook of her arm.

“Damn it, Billy!” She huffed. As usual, the young boy disregarded Haven’s rules of privacy.

“Old Harvie’s dyin’.” He grimaced then flopped into a battered armchair, his face grim, rounded cheeks streaked with a layer of perpetual dirt. “Shit’s gonna hit the fan now.”

“What? I saw him this morning. I thought he was better.” A chill crawled over her skin. They couldn’t lose Harvie. The Boss. He was the heart and soul of Haven. “It must be a rumor. People are scared.”

She stroked Coco who’d poked her head out, blinking dark sparkling eyes at the boy.

“Nope, he’s dyin’. Now Kinnik’ll take over and you know what that means.” He pressed his lips together in a thin line. He took off his newsboy cap and smacked it against his knee. He pulled open a much patched wool jacket, revealing layers of several T-shirts, two button-up shirts, and a sweater vest.

Awen stared at him askance. Maybe it was denial, but Harvie seemed too integral to Haven to die. A part of their secret world would diminish in his absence, and she feared it would be the best part.

“Heard it from Pop himself,” Billy insisted. He rubbed a hand under his nose and planted his cap over matted brown hair. “I overheard him talkin’ to Joe outside the group room. He’d come from Harvie’s place ‘n said the Boss was going downhill fast. He went lookin’ for Kinnik to tell him.”

“Oh, no. This is horrible.” Her heart lurched. Harvie wasn’t just important to Haven, he was the dad she never had. She ran a hand through her hair. What were they going to do?
